Sports Reach and Str8play get the tournament started Friday night at 5 PM.

Conference USSSA played the annual Chattahoochee Major at the South Commons 8 field softball complex in Columbus, Georgia this past Friday and Saturday. There were 17 teams from 12 different states on hand including all 4 Major teams. The weather was so hot and humid you could taste it and they used the Dudley Pro-M balls on the 300 foot dirt fields. The action started at 5 pm eastern time on 6 different fields. In the only “play in” game Legendz/CE/Adiktiv (OK-A) the #16 seed knocked off #17 seeded PurePressure/DownSouthSports/AxeBat (TX-B) 41-25 scoring at least 2 runs in every inning. The game went 7 innings and Jason Branch the Legendz leadoff hitter went 7-7 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. Legendz out homered Pure Pressure 12-8 using all of their homers. In the “Round of 16” Sports Reach/Demarini/Grizzy/SMHS (KY-AA) jumped out to a 22-11 lead on Str8play/Rebel/MAJ/DTS/LA Empire (CA-AA) using up 10 of their home runs. This game can be viewed in condensed form here. The game featured a number of good defensive plays, middle shots, and big home runs. But Str8play had grand slam homers from Anthony “Ant” Acevedo, Tyler Dickens, Acevedo again, and Jeff Roxby to pull off the comeback win 33-30. Acevedo who is among the league leaders in offensive efficiency, was 5-5 with 2 HR and 9 RBI in the win. LSR/BaughFord/TRU/Slugger/Riot (IN-A) scored 10 in the bottom of the 2nd and 12 in the bottom of the 5th vs Juno Athletics (NJ-Major) to lead them 25-19 going into the 7th inning where Juno came back and scored 8 on 3 HR to take a 27-25 lead. But LSR got a single from Zach Goleniak, a homer from Matthew Brady, a walk from Christian Glisson, and won on a walk off homer by Jagger Harjo to end the game 29-27. Both teams hit 13 of their 14 home runs and Harjo was 5-5 in the game with 3 HR, 5 RBI, and 4 runs scored. PrimeTime/Easton/BallHawk (GA-A) playing on their home turf against JBL Roofing/Pauer (OH-AA) jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the 1st inning! But then PrimeTime put up zeroes in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings and JBL scored 16 in the bottom of the 4th to go up 30-18 and JBL beat PrimeTime in 7 innings 32-21. PrimeTime left 2 home runs on the table as JBL was led by “Lazer” Dave Johnson and shortstop Orlando Castillo who were both 5-6 with a combined 4 HR and 10 runs scored. WestPoint (IN-AA) had a 16-14 lead vs DIRTY VEGAS / STEEL / ARK FAB (TX-A) after 3 complete innings, but Dirty Vegas scored 10 in the top of the 5th and 14 in the top of the 6th to win by the run rule 41-24 out homering WestPoint 14-9. Donald Hollingsworth, Ryan Mullen, and Nick Day were all on base 5-5 and Mullen had 8 RBI in the win for Dirty Vegas. I-57 Roofing/Beechy’s/Royce Geo/SA (IL-A) continued their winning ways beating Van Wert Frickers (OH-A) 32-14 in 5 innings after scoring 14 runs in the top of the 4th. Jake Hathaway and Marcus Yoder were each on base 5-5 as they out homered Van Wert 11-2? Resmondo/All American Restoration (FL-Major) scored 11 in the top of the 2nd but found themselves trailing Bay Area Legends (CA-A) 27-16 after 3 complete innings. Resmondo gained control of the game in the top of the 5th though scoring 17 runs on 5 home runs to take a 41-29 lead and went on to win in 7 innings 49-36. Resmondo had 56 hits in the game as Kyle Pearson went 7-7 and Everett Williams, Cory Briggs, and Kevin Bazat all reached base 6 times. In the stadium #1 seeded RoofX/BadDraw/CE/Pure/Envy (IN-Major) made short work of Legendz 25-5 in 3.5 innings as they scored 12 in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Jeremy Fry the two hitter and almost the entire bottom 6 batters in the lineup were perfect on base in the game. The best “Round of 16” matchup can be viewed here in condensed form between Sonny’s and Nitro Circus. In that game Nitro Circus as the home team had a nice 10-6 lead in the 1st inning and increased the lead to 17-6 in the bottom of the 2nd but began the inning hitting 3 consecutive solo home runs. That would come back to haunt them as Sonny’s scored 10 in the top of the 4th and 15 in the top of the 5th to take a 34-20 lead. But Nitro Circus didn’t give up answering with 16 runs on 6 home runs in the bottom of the 5th to get the lead back 36-34. Down the stretch though it was all Sonny’s out scoring Nitro 12-2 in the last two innings to win 46-38. Both teams hit their limit of 14 home runs, and Nitro Circus walked Sonny’s Josh Fyffe 5 times to get to pitcher Bill Pinkham who was 0-7 in the game as he continues to fight through a leg injury. Steele Lewis was 7-7 with 3 HR, 3 doubles, 9 RBI, and 7 runs scored. Heath Barnes and Daniel Cayton were also 7-7 and Tyler Storey drove in 10 runs in the win.

The “Round of 8” was also played on Friday night at 8:30 pm. RoofX made quick work of fellow Indiana team LSR 31-10 in 4 innings in the stadium as Mitch Lendenski and Jeremy Fry set the table for Tyler Ervine’s 4-4 with 4 HR and 8 RBI performance. And Logan Rogers hit 2 HR and had 8 RBI in the game. Resmondo rolled through Dirty Vegas 37-14 in 4 innings scoring at least 7 runs in each inning. Everett Williams and Buddy Wolf were each 5-5, Williams with 3 HR and 10 RBI. And Kyle Pearson went 5-5 extending his on base streak to 41 straight times on base without making an out. Meanwhile on the back fields I-57 was giving Str8play all they could handle leading 29-21 going into the 7th inning but Str8play put up 13 runs on 3 homers to go up 34-29 and I-57 could muster just 2 runs on their last homer to fall short of another “Final 4” appearance 34-31. Daniel Herren and Brandon Streets were both 5-6 in the win. And in the final game of the night JBL and Sonny’s battled in a looong game. Sonny’s scored 17 in the top of the 2nd to go up 24-3 but JBL battled all the way back to tie the game at 40-40 in the bottom of the 6th, held Sonny’s scoreless in the top of the 7th even though they had a home run left, and won on a walk off single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th by Kevin Miller after a Mike Williams double to lead off the inning.

On Saturday the “Final 4” of the winner’s bracket was played at 11:15 am in some serious heat and humidity. Resmondo who has dominated JBL all season struggled against them trailing 9-1 after 1 inning, 20-16 after 2, and 32-24 after 4 innings. But they shut out JBL in the top of the 5th and scored 9 in the 5th and 14 in the 6th to go up 47-41. In the top of the 7th needing 6 to tie, JBL scored 5 using up their last homer and made the final out on a home run for an out to end the game 47-46 with Resmondo winning. Josh Riley was 7-7, Bubba Mack 6-6, and Cory Briggs 6-6 in the game. Kyle Pearson had 3 HR and 11 RBI and made an out on his 2nd at bat, ending his on base streak at 42 straight which we believe is a Conference record. David Johnson had 7 hits and Chris Anninos was on base 8-8 in the loss.

In the other semifinal, this one played in the stadium, Str8play gave RoofX their only challenging game of the tournament. RoofX was down 4-0 after 1 inning but scored 10 in the top of the 2nd to go up 10-5 after 2 innings. But Str8play’s pitching and defense held up through the middle innings and they were tied at 13-13 going into the 5th. RoofX “freed up” their swings in the late innings and they scored 9 in the top of the7th to go up 31-19 and held on to win 31-26 after Str8play used up their 14th and last home run. Terry Lambright led RoofX going 5-5 on base in the game.

The winner’s bracket final was played immediately after the semifinals were finally over at 2 pm in extreme heat and humidity on the 300 foot stadium field. In that game RoofX and Resmondo each scored just 1 run in the 1st inning. Then RoofX put up a 14 spot on 4 homeruns in the top of the 2nd and shut down Resmondo holding them to just 1 run in the bottom of the 2nd. In the bottom of the 3rd with RoofX leading 16-2, Logan Rogers fielded a hard shot and turned a double play to hold Resmondo to 5 runs and RoofX was up 16-7. In the top of the 4th led by a Tyler Ervine grand slam home run, RoofX scored an amazing 21 runs on 8 homeruns, and they won by the 20 run rule 37-13. Most of the RoofX team went 4-5, Mitch Lendenski was 5-5 without a homer and everyone else at the top of the order hit 2 HR and everyone at the bottom hit 1 HR.

The loser’s bracket played out all day long Saturday in the hot sun as it became a battle of attrition. In the top half of the bracket Westpoint beat Pure Pressure and Bay Area before I-57 dropping down beat them 27-10. Nitro Circus starting their day in the loser’s bracket at 8 am beat Primetime, LSR by a run in the 9th inning on a walk off single by Craig Pelligrin, and then beat I-57 by a run before JBL beat them 36-24. And in the lower half of the loser’s bracket Sports Reach came from behind to beat Van Wert 36-33 and Dirty Vegas 35-33 in long games before Sonny’s sent them home 36-17. And Sonny’s beat Juno, Sports Reach, and Str8play before running out of gas in the 4th place game against a depleted JBL team 34-25. Then in the loser’s bracket finals JBL who was already playing with one of the managers Tommy Hedrick at catcher came up with an injury to Adam Kaminski who was cramping the last couple games and they ended up finishing 3rd and forfeiting to Resmondo.

It wasn’t Resmondo’s day.

The championship game was played under the lights for the most part as it cooled off to 85 degrees. 🙂 The final game was strangely anticlimactic as RoofX grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning on a Mitch Lendenski inside the park home run. Then after RoofX scored 11 on 5 in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 14-8, Arlis Miller in right field robbed a Resmondo homer and Logan Rogers in the infield made a great play to hold them to 10 runs which could have been much worse. With Resmondo now leading 18-14 RoofX came in and put on a hitting clinic while making Resmondo pay for a number of errors. Ryan Honeycutt’s 3 run homer gave RoofX a 20-18 lead and they scored 24 runs on 6 home runs in the bottom of the 3rd prompting Resmondo to put in reliever Brad Reckart and then they reentered the starter Travis Clark in the same inning. After that inning which felt like it lasted 30 minutes, Resmondo came up in the top of the 4th needing 1 run to keep the game going and hit 2 singles, but a fielder’s choice, another Arlis Miller home run rob in right field, and a foul out to end the game and they failed to score and lost by the 20 run rule 38-18. Ervine was 5-5 with 7 RBI and Mitch Lendenski 4-4 as he batted for the cycle in the game. And Logan Rogers and MVP Patrick Center were also 4-4. It was RoofX’s 3rd tournament win of the season. They are now 15-0 on 300 foot fields this year. They are 5-0 vs Resmondo this year. And they have won 9 straight games against Major teams.

Hats off to all of the teams, players, and umpires who battled through a very long day on Saturday and Happy Father’s Day to all. The Conference is off for a week then resume with the Seattle Dual and KC Majors next week.

RoofX continues to roll, 9 straight vs Major teams, 5-0 vs Resmondo, 15-0 on 300 foot fields. The defense was good all around the field. Kyle Center hit and pitched his a$$ off and was MVP as Mooch was working. They played without Joey Miller also. They won 4 of their 5 games by the run rule and had two 20 run innings against Resmondo. Brandon Yoder, Jeremy Fry, and Logan Rogers were over .800 as well as utility players Kyle “Cheese” Miller and new pickup Bryan Yoder. Ervine hit 11 HR and drove in 25 runs. They seemed unaffected by the heat and humidity.

2nd Place – Resmondo/All American Restoration/O

FL-Major Record 4-2

Resmondo struggled defensively which led to a lot of unearned runs allowed against JBL and RoofX twice. Bradley Jones and Phil Matte were basically out with hamstring issues and Kyle Pearson jammed a thumb and missed the Championship game. Kyle Pearson had 42 straight on base without an out dating back to the Memorial Major last month before JBL got him to ground out but he was still .909 on the weekend with a team high 22 RBI and 7 HR. Josh Riley was .808, Bubba Mack .824, and Offensive MVP Cory Briggs .870 while running center field. Resmondo travels to KC next weekend where they are the favorites and if they win that tournament they will be the #1 seed for the Smoky Mountain Classic next month where they are rumored to be using the Dudley Hardcore ball. Last year when they used the Hardcore ball at the Smoky, Resmondo averaged 104 runs per 7 innings at bat so look for all time runs and home run records to fall at the Smoky this year.

3rd Place – JBL Roofing/Pauer

OH-AA Record 4-2

JBL was best in class, again. They did so with a depleted roster as they let go Steve Edwards (bad back), Cody Roton, and Fred Heiser. But they nearly beat Resmondo losing 47-46 in the semifinals and then upset Sonny’s in a game where both teams were dead tired. JBL has not turned in stats for this event.

Sonny’s won a long game Friday in their opener against Nitro Circus but was then walked off by JBL. In the loser’s bracket they played almost all day long running out of gas finally against JBL in the 4th place game. Sonny’s won’t be at their best until pitcher Bill Pinkham gets back to full health. Daniel Cayton .886 and Steele Lewis .829 led the offense. Steele also had 14 HR, 34 RBI, and 28 runs scored.

MD-AA Record 3-2

Nitro Circus played a lot of really long games in the heat and finished tied for 5th. They haven’t been able to break through against the Major teams yet this year for the most part which is holding them back. Cardwell and Greinert led in HR with 9. Cardwell had 18 RBI. And John Williams at .833, Tom Bloom at .867, and Cody Collins at .818 were the on base percentage leaders. Nitro who has basically played every tournament so far this year will finally get a break until the Smoky.

Str8play had a nice come from behind win over Sports Reach, beat a very good I-57 team, and then gave RoofX their only 7 inning game before losing to RoofX and then Sonny’s by 8. Another solid weekend. It will be fun to see if they can challenge Resmondo next weekend in KC?

Sports Reach had a tough loss to Str8play on Friday night and then early Saturday morning had to come back from a 28-5 deficit to Van Wert Frickers. Then they beat Dirty Vegas 35-33 on a 2 out walk off grand slam by Joel Sanchez before losing to Sonny’s by 16. They played without Rich Racobaldo. Dagmar Pena led the team at .923 on base. Brad Sheffield hit 8 HR. And Austin Mapes had 17 RBI.

Tied 7th – I-57 Roofing/Beechy’s/Royce Geo/SA

IL-A Record 2-2

I-57 run ruled Van Wert then lost a tough one to Str8play Friday night 34-31 having the bats in their hands at the end. On Saturday in the loser’s bracket they run ruled WestPoint 26-10 before losing to Nitro Circus 25-24. I-57 was best in class in the ‘A’ division finishing tied for 7th. Jacob Hoskins led in on base at .900. Hoskins and Orlando Olivera hit 9 HR each. And Olivera led the team with 22 RBI. I-57 is playing in KC next weekend and are 4th in the Conference points standings.

Tied 9th – DIRTY VEGAS / STEEL / ARK FAB (TX-A) 1-2

Dirty Vegas beat WestPoint by the run rule 41-24 in their opener Friday before Resmondo sent them to the loser’s bracket 37-14 where they lost on a 2 out grand slam homer to Sports Reach. It was a tough weekend for ‘A’ teams in Georgia. Nick Day, Donald Hollingsworth, and Ryan Mullen were all over .800. Jared Hunt hit 7 HR and had 16 RBI.

Tied 9th – WestPoint (INj-AA) 2-2 – Westpoint lost to Dirty Vegas and I-57 but beat Pure Pressure and Bay Area.

Tied 9th – Juno Athletics (NJ-Major) 1-2 – Juno continued to struggle. Andrew Collins was out with a hamstring. Manager/Sponsor Mark Carucci was not there but they lost to LSR in their opener, beat Legendz, then lost to Sonny’s 42-34. Kade Christensen who was moved to leadoff was .900 on base.

Tied 9th – LSR/BaughFord/TRU/Slugger/Riot (IN-A) 1-2 – LSR beat Juno on a walk off homer by Jagger Harjo, lost to RoofX, then lost to Nitro Circus on a walk off single in the bottom of the 9th. That isn’t a terrible weekend. Frank Fisk was .800. Harjo hit 9 HR. And Matt Brady led the team with 11 RBI.

Legendz/CE/Adiktiv beat Pure Pressure but lost to RoofX and Juno. They continue to tweak the roster bringing in pitcher Mike Thorbrogger who last played Major with Competitive Edge.

Van Wert Frickers lost to I-57 then blew a huge lead to Sports Reach.

Bay Area Legends lost a spirited game against Resmondo Friday night 49-36 then lost to WestPoint 37-30. Bryson Baker and Mario Moralez were over .800 on base.
