Grilled Chicken Wings Recipe (1)

Grilling chicken wings before a big game is a great way to have the best appetizers at your next tailgate party. That said these wings are great as-is and need no fancy occasion or excuse to serve them up. If you’re in the mood for wings then this grilled chicken wings recipe really can’t disappoint! Serve them up and share with friends and family and watch how fast they disappear along with the spicy sauce. Both the wings and sauce are easy to make so don’t be surprised if you try making them for every get-together this season.

Grilled Wings

I love the deep smokey, char-grilled flavor that the wings absorb from the heat of the grill. They are crispy without being fried. Golden, plump and delicious! But what really makes this grilled chicken wings recipe stand out is the fiery comeback sauce! It’s called comeback sauce for a reason my friends. You cannot stop yourself from dipping into that sauce over and over again! Well, I couldn’t stop myself from dipping into that sauce.

Recipe Tips

I found my Sambal Oelek red chili paste in the Thai section of my local grocery store. This is usually the international aisle where you find everything from around the world. If you can’t find this you can replace it with regular hot sauce or another chili sauce option.

If you don’t want to serve these wings with the comeback sauce, it’s perfectly fine to swap them out for your favorite dipping sauce instead. since these wings are so basic and smile in seasoning they’ll go great with any sauces or even no sauces at all.

FAQs

What is comeback sauce?

The term “comeback sauce” is mostly heard in the south around Mississippi. It’s a sauce used for dipping fried foods into and its main components are mayo and chili sauce. The sauce was invented in Mississippi and continues to be a fan favorite. Once you try it it’s not hard to see why it’s such a popular dipping sauce. The creamy dip and nice spice work together wonderfully.

How long are grilled chicken wings good for?

You can keep your leftover wings stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Reheat again before serving. You can reheat your wings in the microwave, air fryer, or in the oven. I personally like to reheat them in the air fryer because it helps to make them taste nice and crispy and almost as good as fresh. That said you can choose whichever way you want.

How do you know when chicken wings are done on the grill?

You will know that your wings have finished cooking when the internal temperature of them reaches 165 degrees F on an instant-read thermometer. This should take several minutes to do (about 10-20) depending on the size and the heat of the grill. If you’re using thawed or frozen wings will also play a role in how long they take to cook as well so keep that in mind too.

FAQs

What is the secret to grilling wings? ›

Utilizing a two-zone cooking system and a reverse sear method is the best way to cook wings on the grill. Start the wings first on the indirect heat side of the grill (at about 325 degrees Fahrenheit), flip them as needed as they brown, and then gradually move them to the direct heat side to sear and finish them.

How long do you cook chicken wings on the grill? ›

It takes approximately 25-30 minutes to grill chicken wings. Make sure you are flipping the wings every few minutes to ensure they are cooked evenly through and the skin cooks evenly as well.

What is the best technique for chicken wings? ›

Food stylist Richmond Flores' go-to method is marinating the wings and then steaming them before frying. This method, he says, imparts tremendous flavor and tenderizes the meat, but more importantly, the steaming helps render the fat from the skin which then allows the wings to crisp up perfectly.

Are grilled chicken wings better? ›

Advantages to grilling wings

First, by not frying, we can add layers of flavor to our wings. We use a BBQ rub on them in this case—a rub that would normally float away in the fryer. That means deeper flavor, and that's great. Of course, we'll also get flavor from the grill itself, with tasty bits of char on each wing.

Should I put oil on chicken wings before grilling? ›

Prevent Sticking

Toss the wings in a few tablespoons of neutral cooking oil (like canola or vegetable oil), then season with salt and pepper before adding them to the grill. The oil will prevent the chicken from sticking to the grill.

What is the secret to perfect wings? ›

The most widespread trick on the internet involves sprinkling a little baking powder onto the wings before baking them. The kitchen science wizards at America's Test Kitchen and Serious Eats both found this worked best for them.

Do you marinate chicken wings before or after cooking? ›

We like a Mediterranean-inspired mix of oregano, rosemary, salt, pepper, garlic, and olive oil, but any fresh marinade will help infuse the wings with flavor down to the bone. Resealable plastic bags are your friend here; combine the marinade and wings in one and let it sit for at least an hour before grilling.

What is the key to a truly great chicken wing? ›

A grill with one side that's hot and one side that's cool — one side with no or very little fire underneath it — is what you need: put the wings on the cool side, cover the grill and let the ovenlike heat melt the fat away through the grates without any fear of an intense flame burning the skin from below.

Do you put sauce on wings before or after grilling? ›

What you want are wings that are nicely charred on all sides and cooked through. Use tongs to transfer fully-cooked wings to a bowl. Add BBQ sauce.

Do you grill wings with the lid open or closed? ›

Place the lid on the grill and let them finish cooking through. Depending on the size of the wings, they should take about 8 to 10 minutes to finish cooking. Use your digital meat thermometer to make sure they've hit the internal temperature of 175°F.

Should I boil chicken wings before grilling? ›

This is an easy way to make some great buffalo wings. By boiling the chicken first, you keep the chicken moist before it hits the grill to finish off.

How to keep wings moist while grilling? ›

Soaking chicken wings in salty water causes the meat to retain more moisture during cooking. You're less likely to end up with dry meat if you brine the wings. You can also add aromatics such as garlic, bay leaves, and black peppercorns to the brine. This will give the meat and skin a hint of additional flavor.

Should I sauce my wings before grilling? ›

This is because the sugars in most marinades will burn on the grill before the chicken is fully cooked. It is best to toss the grilled wings in sauce AFTER they are cooked, not before.

Do you close the grill when cooking wings? ›

Place the lid on the grill and let them finish cooking through. Depending on the size of the wings, they should take about 8 to 10 minutes to finish cooking. Use your digital meat thermometer to make sure they've hit the internal temperature of 175°F.

How to grill wings without burning? ›

Use indirect and direct heat

The hot zone should be 350 to 400 F, while the cool zone remains unlit. Before placing the wings on the grill, make sure the wings are covered in vegetable oil and salt, and pepper. The oil prevents the chicken from sticking to the grill (per My Recipes).
