Whether it’s enjoying a heaping pile of fries along with a fully-loaded, juicy hamburger served with a chocolate shake or as a stand-alone order all by themselves, french fries are the perfect side dish.

These potato strips are baked, not fried. When you bake “french fries” in the oven, you eliminate most of the fat and calories, and they taste great. Made with a drizzle of olive oil and lightly seasoned, these thick cut oven french fries are so incredibly delicious.

Potatoes are low in calories and are fat, sodium, and cholesterol-free. They are a good source of fiber and keep you feeling full for longer periods of time. Potatoes are also a great source of potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and iron. Now you can feel good eating them!

Ingredient Notes

See recipe box below for ingredient amounts and full recipe instructions.

  • Potato: You just need 1 potato to make a small batch of french fries. I prefer using an Idaho potato because they crisp nicely when baked.
  • Olive Oil: I use extra virgin olive oil in this baked french fries recipe. Extra virgin olive oil is the least processed form of olive oil. It is unrefined oil and the highest-quality olive oil you can buy. Because of the way extra virgin olive oil is made, it retains more true olive taste. It also contain more of the vitamins and minerals found in olives. It’s my favorite type of olive oil to use, but you may use a lighter olive oil instead.
  • Seasonings: Salt and black pepper.

How to Make This Recipe

  1. Scrub your potato. Either leave the skins on or peel them (I prefer the peel on).
  2. Slice the potato lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices, and cut again into 1/4-inch strips. As you cut the potatoes, toss them into a bowl of cold water for 10 minutes. This removes some of the starch from the potatoes, prevents them from turning brown, and helps the outside stay crispy.
  3. Remove from water. Pat dry, and toss in a bowl with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  4. Place them on the toaster oven baking tray and bake them for about 25 minutes.

Expert Tips

  • Cut potatoes into evenly sized pieces so they bake evenly and finish baking at the same time.
  • I usually do not peel the potato but you certainly can if you want to.
  • Leave a little space between the potato wedges so that they crisp all the way around and don’t stick together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the Best Potatoes for Baked French Fries?

Idaho potatoes are the best potato to use for baked french fries. Their thick skins guarantee a crispy outside and the insides become fluffy when baked.

How Do You Make Fries Crispy?

Make sure you use plenty of oil. The oil prevents the potatoes from sticking to the baking sheet and they also give the potato wedges crisp, caramelized edges. Also, be sure to leave space around the potatoes on the sheet. Overcrowding in the pan will cause the potatoes to steam rather than bake properly.

  4. I love fries !!!! And this is a simple way to make them without having to out and buy some

  5. Cool Joanie! I am a huge fries fan. It is the foil that concerns me. My toaster oven instruction says it is unsafe to use foil in it. I really want to try this recipe. What’s your recommendation? Any alternative for the foil?

    1. Zac, follow the instructions in the manual for your toaster oven. I can use aluminum foil in my toaster oven but if yours says you shouldn’t, don’t use any. The only thing the aluminum foil does is keep the tray clean. It doesn’t affect the cooking so I’d advise you not to use the foil.

Hello,I just bought a Waring convention oven and also a bpa free silicon non stick baking mat for the tray or the glass or metal pan you choose to use in oven. Its great for tater tots, anything you would use to line with foil or to have food not stick to pans.Buy on Amazon .com less than $10.00 I hope this helps anybody.

        1. Thanks for sharing, Loretta.

  6. These look awesome! I am a sucker for big fries!

  7. Oh man, I am all about french fries!! I have to say, when I was in college, living in a dinky apartment, my extra large toaster/convection oven got more use than ANYTHING else. (That includes the pot that boiled the ramen!) I wish I’d had thought of something like these though!

  8. I have a daughter heading to college this fall so this looks like something she’d love to make! Stopping by from The SITS Girls!

  9. Just got my convection toaster oven so am a bit in the dark on how to use it. You didn’t mention
what degrees you cook your french fries at. Please advise. 🙂
    Laura

    1. Laura, thank you so much for letting me know. In a conventional toaster oven, bake the french fries at 425 degrees for 20-25 minutes. I’ve never baked in a convection toaster oven, but since convection ovens generally cook foods faster, I would suggest cooking the fries at 425 degrees for 10-15 minutes (check at the 10 minute mark and continue cooking if needed).
