Dr Michael Mosley, who has frequently appeared on This Morning and The One Show, has gone missing in Greece after a walk on the "secluded" St Nicholas’ Beach
This Morning star and TV doctor Michael Mosley has been reported missing while on holiday with his wife on the Greek island of Symi.
A massive search is under way with islanders and holidaymakers pitching in. It is understood 67-year-old Dr Mosley's wife, Dr Clare Bailey, 62, had alerted the emergency services after her husband vanished on a coastal walk on Wednesday in the area of St Nicholas Beach.
Symi is billed by Jet2Holidays as being a “relatively undiscovered” island. It’s known for its pastel port, beautiful buildings and crystal clear waters. Meanwhile, according to website Travel Ladies , Symi is “relatively safe”. The website notes that petty crimes are “extremely rare” and the local population are friendly. Terrain wise, the island consists of mountains and valleys and is arid.
A local Facebook group said Mosley went for a walk from Saint Nikolas Beach at around 1.30pm Greek time on Wednesday, but did not come back home Thursday morning. Jet2Holidays describes Saint Nikolas Beach as "secluded".
According to Athens online newspaper Eleftheros Typos, authorities said on Thursday that Mosley "probably fell from a great height while walking on the beach of Agios Nikolaos".
Senior Police Spokesman Constantina Dimoglidou said ongoing searches that began early this morning have yet to yield any find. He said: "He was at the beach of Ag. Nikolas with another couple when he decided to go back to his home in the area of Pedi of Symi. It was around 1.30pm and he forgot his phone at the beach.
"Any and every attempt to track him down has not produced any result. We have now asked the fire brigade to assist in the operation in the case that he may have slipped, tripped, fallen, even bitten by a snake, remaining injured somewhere. There is just no trace of him. None whatsoever and that means that for us at least, every potential scenario is open and being investigated."
Dr Mosley's popularity as a dietary expert sees him regularly appear on TV programmes such as This Morning and The One Show and he has written several publications based on healthier eating.
He regularly appears on ITV's This Morning and is known for his famous 5:2 diet, where people reduce their calories for two days while maintaining their normal diet for the remaining five. He is also the the author of the international bestselling books The Fast 800, The Clever Guts Diet, The Fast Diet, Fast Exercise and The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet.
He has also presented Inside Porton Down: Britain’s Secret Weapons Research Facility for BBC Four and E-Cigarettes: Miracle or Menace? for BBC Two.
He is married with four children.
Dr Mosley's wife Clare reported her husband missing after he failed to return from a coastal walk after six hours. She raised the alarm at about 7.30pm local time yesterday and emergency services began ro re-trace his steps. They have been unable to locate him.
Michael's last post was just a day ago and saw him promote his Radio 4 show Just One Thing about improving health and wellbeing. Concerned for his wellfare, his fans have already taken to the post to comment, with one writing: "Hope you are found safe and well." While another commented: "Please be ok @michaelmosley_official." He had not posted about going on the trip to Greece on Instagram.
Michael's last post on X - formerly Twitter - saw him refer to his wife as he responded to a fan. They had initially commented by saying: "Hi Michael hope you read this. Thank you so much. I decided to take cold showers after listening to your episode about the benefits of it. Now I’ve had a rotator cuff injury for a while and had to take at least 2 ibuprofen daily. A week after the cold showers, I haven’t had to."
In response, Michael had said: "Delighted to hear it.. while reading your tweet (or is it your X) I had a bad moment when I thought you were going to say you got a rotator cuff injury after falling in the shower…" To which another fan responded: "Heard the Dead Ringers parody? I'd see it as an honour!" Michael replied: "I have.. I’m not convinced I really sound like that but my wife Clare says it is spot on."
